Most people picture Sápmi as a postcard: snow, reindeer, maybe a glimpse of the northern lights. But spend a day with us and you’ll see there is so much more.
Our people, the Sámi, have lived in the Arctic for thousands of years, across what is now Norway, Sweden, Finland, and the Kola Peninsula in Russia. Borders came and went, but the reindeer stayed at the center of our lives. They still are.
We live in Guovdageaidnu, or Kautokeino, in the middle of the vast Finnmark plateau. Finnmark is Norway’s largest county and the heart of Norwegian reindeer herding. Out here the land stretches as far as you can see, and the seasons decide where we go next. In winter we follow the herd across the frozen tundra. In spring the calves are born, and in summer we move toward the coast.
When you visit, you step into that rhythm with us. You’ll feed the reindeer, sit by the fire in our lavvu, and taste food prepared the way our grandparents made it. You’ll hear the stories that have been passed down through generations.
There are more than 8 billion people in the world, and very few of them will ever come this far north to see life the way we live it. We’d love for you to be one of them.
Come and see Sápmi through our eyes.
